The Unbelieving Believer

The story was told of a man who walked closely with a friend, being told of things to come concerning him, but the friend didn’t believe. He said until he sees and touches before he believes.

This illustrates the posture of countless believers today. We base our faith on things that we see instead of relying on that which has been spoken by God’s mouth. The enemy plants doubts and unbelief in our hearts, asking us just like He did to Eve “Has God said?” in a bid to make us disobey or doubt God.

To combat the enemies’ tactics, we must build up our faith to ensure not ending up doubting God’s promises for us. Some ways of building up our most our faith includes:

  1. The Word of God

In mirroring our savior in the wilderness our first weapon against the enemy is the Word of God. Never enter a conversation with Satan but for every argument he brings promptly and boldly reply with the scripture. This is why it is important that “you study to show yourself approved a workman not needed to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth”. You must spend time reading, studying, memorizing, and meditating upon the word. Let the word be your sure sword against the enemy.

  1. Faith

A story was told of Smith Wigglesworth who visited a wealthy man while being in debt. One would have thought that Wigglesworth would mention the situation to the man but he didn’t because he knew that God was able to provide and the Lord did provide. A common definition of faith is found in Heb 11:1 --- “Now Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The dictionary in turn defines substance as “the real physical matter of which a person or thing consists of and which has a tangible, solid presence”. In simple terms, what you can see, touch, feel, or hear. But the Bible makes it clear that you don’t have to see it physically before you believe it, if the word has come to you either by the written word of God (logos) or the revelational word of God (Rhema), it is infallible, true and authentic. All you must do is believe God for its manifestation and give thanks to Him for His faithfulness.

  1. Hope

Faith is the evidence of things hoped for. You must keep your hope alive in God knowing that faithful is he who has promised and can fulfil.

  1. Pray

I love that man in the bible, “He said Lord I believe, help my unbelief” When it seems like your faith is dwindling and you are becoming weary, you can boldly ask God to help you. Remember he is a father that cares.

  1. Praise, Worship, and Thanksgiving

Phil 4:6 “Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God.” Amp.

There is power in your praise and more in thanksgiving. Spend time in thanksgiving, instead of complaining, identify the things working out in your life and thank God for those knowing he can provide for others, this will work miracles in your life.

  1. Praying in the Spirit

The Father has given us special access to communicate with Him, which no man cannot understand. When you’ve spoken in your natural Language and become lost for words, it is time to let the Holy Ghost take hold of you and pray through you. Romans 8:26 “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” Pray in the Holy Ghost and soar. Jude 1: 20 “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost”

Doubt, unbelief, and a wavering heart make it hard to enter the rest of God. Endeavor to believe God beyond your physical senses, pray in the spirit, praise, and immerse yourself in the Word of God and see the Lord turn things around for you positively.
