Oh Zacchaeus, Come Down! (Part 2)

Zacchaeus faced numerous challenges in his pursuit to see Jesus, yet he persevered with remarkable determination. His journey involved overcoming several obstacles that can be likened to the struggles we encounter in seeking a deeper relationship with God.

Ø Crowd Pressures

Luke 19:3 says “And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.” Zacchaeus was short and couldn’t see over the crowd, symbolising the distractions and barriers that can obscure our spiritual vision. Zacchaeus pressed on despite the press of people and the stigma attached to climbing a tree. He could have followed the crowd as everyone else did, but to have a personal encounter with God, he sought Jesus in a way that separated him from the multitude. By climbing the tree, Zacchaeus did something entirely different from what the crowd was doing. The Bible advises against following the crowd blindly, reminding us that seeking God often requires standing apart from others.

Ø Physical and Social Barriers

Climbing a tree was considered undignified for a man of Zacchaeus’s position. This reflects the challenge of breaking through societal expectations and personal discomforts. Zacchaeus’s willingness to humble himself by climbing a tree shows his determination to prioritize his spiritual hunger over societal norms. Sometimes, seeking God requires us to step outside our comfort zones and face ridicule for our actions. Luke 19:4 affirms his stature: "And he ran before, and climbed up into a Sycamore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way."

Ø Public Scrutiny

Luke 19:7 – "And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, that he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner." When Jesus chose to associate with Zacchaeus, a tax collector, the crowd criticized and murmured against Him. This highlights the judgment and opposition we might face when we pursue a genuine relationship with Christ. Many people miss their divine encounters because they are too concerned with what others might say. Zacchaeus, however, remained focused on his encounter with Jesus, ignoring the noise of the crowd.

Ø Personal Doubts and Inadequacies

Zacchaeus’s height represents his physical limitations and, symbolically, his feelings of inadequacy. Yet, his determination shows that faith can overcome self-doubt. He didn’t allow his short stature to keep him from his goal. This teaches us not to let physical or emotional limitations hinder our spiritual pursuits. The Bible reminds us that when we seek God first, all other things, including our physical needs, will be added unto us (Matthew 6:33). Also, Philippians 4:13 tell us that "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." This implies that our strength is in God.

To crave for God like Zacchaeus, we can follow these steps:

Ø Seek God with Determination

Zacchaeus, despite being short and surrounded by a crowd, climbed a tree to see Jesus. This act demonstrated his determination to encounter Christ. In our spiritual journey, we must seek God with a similar determination. No matter the obstacles, whether they are external distractions or personal struggles, we should be persistent in our pursuit of God. As Jeremiah 29:13 promises, "And ye shall seek me, and find me when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

Ø Humble Yourself Before God

Zacchaeus was a wealthy man, yet he humbled himself by climbing a tree—an undignified act for a man of his status. To truly crave God, we must set aside our pride and acknowledge that we need Him. Humbling ourselves before God means recognizing that no matter our position in life, we are dependent on His grace. As James 4:10 says, "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you."

Ø Respond to God's Call

When Jesus called Zacchaeus, he immediately responded and came down from the tree. Similarly, when we crave God, we must be spiritually sensitive and ready to act when He calls us. God knocks at the door of our hearts, but it is up to us to open and let Him in. Revelation 3:20 emphasizes this, saying, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hears my voice, and open the door, I will come into him."

Ø Repent and Seek Transformation

After meeting Jesus, Zacchaeus repented and offered to make restitution for his wrongdoings. Craving God involves a sincere desire for change and transformation. When we seek God, we must be willing to turn away from past mistakes and pursue a new way of living, as Acts 3:19 encourages: "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out."

Ø Pursue God Above Material Wealth

Although Zacchaeus was wealthy, his desire for Jesus was greater than his attachment to riches. When we crave God, we must prioritize Him over material possessions or worldly success. Matthew 6:33 reminds us, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Ø Desire Intimacy with God

Zacchaeus didn’t just want to see Jesus from a distance—he wanted a personal encounter. Likewise, we should crave not only knowledge of God but also an intimate relationship with Him. Psalm 27:4 beautifully expresses this desire: "One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life."

In conclusion, Zacchaeus’s journey to see Jesus illustrates the importance of determination, humility, and faith in our spiritual pursuits. Despite facing obstacles such as crowd pressures, societal expectations, and personal doubts, Zacchaeus persisted in his desire to encounter Jesus. His actions teach us that craving for God requires stepping out of our comfort zones, humbling ourselves, and responding to His call with readiness. Zacchaeus’s story encourages us to seek a deeper relationship with God, prioritize Him above worldly things, and pursue personal transformation. Through faith and perseverance, like Zacchaeus, we can overcome challenges and experience the fullness of God's presence in our lives.

PRAYER POINT
