Not Neglecting The Ordinary After The Doing The Extraordinary

2

One beautiful thing about the miraculous and extraordinary is the awe-inspiring tremor and excitement set in the heart of everyone present to witness such an event. People are literally mind-blown after such an occurrence because things beyond human comprehension have occurred. However, although the moment is massive and inspiring, it is equally important to examine what happens after those events. For example, after Jesus delivered the woman who was caught in adultery from the fierce and vengeful fury of the Pharisees in John 8, let’s see what happens in the 11th verse, “She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more”. There was a simple instruction for her to no longer sin after the deliverance.

In this article, we’ll examine a scenario that involves our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, making an ordinary request after something extraordinary has happened. In Luke 8:54,55, “And he put them all out and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid arise. And her spirit came again, and he commanded to give her meat”. What a powerful, powerful proclamation by the Lord. The young lady was dead before Jesus came to the scene. The people at home thought all hope was lost and nothing else could be done. When Jesus reassured them that she would be raised from the dead, they instead laughed at him to scorn. Unperturbed, Jesus stepped in and did the extraordinary. After she was raised from the dead, Jesus asked them to give her ordinary meat to eat—the physical, following the spiritual.

One would think that after the lady was raised from the dead, perhaps, she would only be sustained by the spiritual immediately, but we learn a lesson from Jesus. Even though she was raised by the spiritual, and her sustenance was from God, there was the necessary physical food Jesus was interested in her having. The bread of life, the one who said his meat is to do the will of the father, wanted the young lady to receive meat to eat. Are there ministers who get so preoccupied with doing the spiritual that they fail to do the basic physical thing? Perhaps you’ve obtained great visions, grand and lofty dreams, and ideas about the present and the near future; unless you take the necessary physical, ordinary steps in line with that goal, you might miss out on all that God has in store for you.

Joseph was elevated mightily from the prison unto the palace. After the interpretation of the dream that Pharoah had, from divine inspiration, there was the necessary ordinary, physical step that had to be taken towards building the silos and storing the corn for the remaining years of plenty. The divine had taken place, but the physical or human effort needed to be done. In Jesus’ posture asking the lady to be fed, we learn some things:

  • Physical food is essential for sustenance.
  • Don’t limit the help you can render to the needs of the spirit; also, look at the needs of the body and help whenever you can
  • Don’t feed the dead child. Raise them first before they can take care of the physical.
  • In many cases, addressing spiritual matters can pave the way for addressing the physical needs of those around you.
  • Finally, when you get that spiritual insight from the Lord, take a step towards backing up your faith with works.

PRAYER POINTS

I pray that the Almighty God help us all as we pursue His fullness, love, and mercies, not neglecting the ordinary after the supernatural and grace in Jesus' name. Amen
